began...
It was only at the age of 13 that the music bug hit me. A revelation that didn't fade over time but rather solidified throughout the years.
I was genuinely a shy boy, and the idea of making music or singing in front of an audience was inconceivable for me. So, I first joined a band and then several others, mainly groups of friends with whom I could have a blast making music!
The first instrument I picked up was the piano! Got it at 13, and it was around the same age that I started singing.
During the time I played with many different people, I started wanting to dabble in everything! That means during a rehearsal, you could find me at the piano, the guitar, or even the drums, all in a single session.
So, what did I do? I bought everything!
Don't worry, I didn't clean out my parents' pockets... at least not all at once! My parents bought me my first synth at a flea market, and I'll tell you without any shame, the deal was irresistible: $30 after some negotiations! I remember being the happiest kid in the world! The moment we got home, I plugged it in and played all night!
It was nice to know how to play some simple piano pieces, but it wasn't exactly what I wanted.
Deep down, what I wanted was to play songs I could sing along to.
So, the goal was crystal clear: learn to play the piano all by myself, without ever setting foot in a conservatory!
The Self-taught
journey
At 18, my room had turned into a mini studio, filled with instruments and tools for recording! I had two synthesizers, two guitars, and a drum kit! That's the music part, but I had also bought a bunch of electronic gear, including an external sound card, monitoring headphones, and most importantly, a studio microphone!
Five years had passed, and I had learned to play the piano, guitar, and drums. Of course, WITHOUT GOING TO THE CONSERVATORY!
Like many self-taught musicians, my first instinct was to check out YouTube to find piano or guitar tutorials. In 2009, there weren't as many videos on learning piano online as there are today, so I managed to navigate through a few videos on my own.
However, I quickly found myself limited because YouTube isn't an optimized platform for a healthy instrument learning environment:

Side suggestions can be distracting.
When I realized these elements, I decided to learn the piano on my own, trying a multitude of different techniques and methods until I found the one that worked for me! Over time, I realized I had the same journey as other self-taught musicians, and, most importantly, that this non-conservatory learning approach worked for EVERYONE!
I often repeat: EVERYONE can learn to play an instrument!
